At an industrialization brief of the country by Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta, he announced the return of Peugeot in Kenya. Groupe PSA and URYSIA signed a contract on Saturday at State House Kenya to commence assembly of the Peugeot Brand in Kenya. The two companies were represented by Claude Mwende, CEO URYSIA and Jean-Christophe Quemard who is director of Middle East and Africa for Groupe PSA.

Peugeot assembly in Kenya is slated to start in June, with annual volume expected to cross the 1000 unit mark for the Kenyan market. Production will start with the Peugeot 508 and the new Peugeot 3008 SUV right after.

Groupe PSA is the manufacturer of the Peugeot, DS Automobiles and Citroen car brands, while URYSIA is the importer and distributor of the Peugeot brand in Kenya since 2010 after Marshall’s exited the market.

Peugeot as a brand was quite popular in the 80’s and 90’s in Kenya under the Marshall’s brand before the company exited the market and from then on it has been largely distribution and support. Local assembly does have a huge market impact and Peugeot is bound to bring a huge impact in the space that has been largely dominated by Toyota and recent entrant into local assembly Volkswagen.
