In this digital age, emojis are the universal language which most people use to express their feelings, to represent the world around us and to keep the conversations going. Ofcourse ‘emoji world’ still has gaps like the fact that up-to date, all couple emojis are still yellow.

In 2015, emojis for same sex couples became a reality and now Tinder has launched a campaign called #Representlove to try to reduce the gap in ‘emoji world’. The Change.org petition launched by Tinder reads “Emojis are the universal language of the digital age. We use them to show our emotions, to give clarity and context to our conversations, and to represent the world around us. It may seem like there’s an emoji for everything, but that’s not the case”.

The proposal signed by Tinder the dating app, Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Emojination founder Jeniffer 8. Lee and which petitions Unicode to introduce multicultural couples emoji says;“The lack of representation for diverse racial identities is a significant issue in an increasingly globalized society. With this problem gaining increased media attention, and since efforts have already been made to ensure the representation of non-hetero-normative sexual identities, now seems an appropriate cultural moment to give people the opportunity to see themselves represented in the emoji world.”

Tinder has added in its blog that it is involved in this #RepresentLove campaign because it believes that all love deserves representation through an emoji.

The proposal also requests that for the existing emoji, an addition of 21 different character sequences with different skins tones. These skin tones to be included are light, medium and dark.

For the proposed emoji to complete the process of a review, approval and standardization, it could take up-to two years keeping in mind that the new emoji will need to be standardized across all platforms once approved.
