Black Panther, A Wrinkle In Time makes history at the Box Office

A Wrinkle in Time & Black Panther

As put by CNN, last weekend marked the first time that films by black directors with $100 million plus budgets have ever placed in the first two box office spots.

Black Panther which has been dominating the Box Office for 4 weeks straight took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office with US$41.1 million according to studio estimates on Sunday. The blockbuster has shown no signs of slowing down thanks to fan obsession.

Last weekend, Black Panther which is directed by Ryan Coogler and is starring an almost all-black cast, crossed the US$1 billion mark worldwide after debuting in China which brought in US$66.5 million adding up to a total of US$100 million international weekend. Black Panther has joined the billion-dollar-club as the fifth in list after The Avengers, Avengers (Age Of Ultron), Iron Man 3, and Captain America (Civil War).

A Wrinkle in Time which is directed by Ava DuVernay and is starring Oprah Winfrey, a 14-year old Lead Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling took took No. 2 position and brought in just over $33 million in its opening weekend.

In honor of A Wrinkle in Time opening, Ryan Coogler penned a heartfelt letter of gratitude to Ava DuVernay saying “Ava is a pioneer. She makes the most distant dreams and ideas a reality. She made a show called “Queen Sugar” and mandated the use of female directors and key creatives a full two years before the great Frances McDormand shared with the world what an inclusion rider was. Ava is inclusion, equity, and representation.”
