The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rippled through the country on Sunday has disrupted traffic flow along Nairobi-Maimahiu- Naivasha highway.

Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) has reported a fault along the Naivasha Maimahiu Road, at Fay Amario about 8 km away from Naivasha Town.

Motorists using the road that passes through Fai Amario road have been warned against using the road following tremors that the country experienced on Sunday. Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru cautioned that a bridge that links a section of the road in the region has developed cracks.

Traffic cops have been deployed to direct traffic into a diversion created along a section of the road to facilitate traffic. Other road users in the region have been advised to heed to instructions given by the authority until clearance to use the bridge has been issued to the public.

KENHA issued a statement on the status of the Highway, giving alternatives to the road users who frequent that particular route.

In 2018, a 2-kilometer fault line ravaged Moi Ndabi area residents on the outskirts of Naivasha town with at least 16 families forced to move to higher ground after sections of their homes sank which was  preceded by a similar incidence in Mai Mahiu where a section of road had sunk in what geologists said was a slow separation of the Somali plate from the rest of Africa.

Heavy commercial vehicles have been advised to exercise caution and restraint and to follow traffic detours as advised by the traffic cops. Motorists have been discouraged from overlapping, to avoid traffic flow disruption and urged to observe lane discipline.

Private vehicle operators can use Kamandura, Limuru, Kinungi Naivasha Highway in the meantime.
