New Rules Introduced for Kenyan Passport Applications

As the deadline for e-passport application closed in, last-minute Kenyans camped at the immigrations office in Nyayo house to make the most of the little time left. There was too many of them forcing the government to extend the deadline and give priority to cases that needed the e-passport asap.

From now henceforth, passport applicants will be required to book an appointment in the ecitizens portal specifying the date, time and the station of their convenience, as the Department of Immigration has introduced an appointment system for persons seeking to apply for the new generation passports.

In a statement released on Sunday, the appointment system will enable better planning for applicants to take biometrics at passport processing stations.

 

“You will henceforth be required to book an appointment in the e-Citizen portal specifying the date, rime and station of your convenience,” added the statement. The new e-passport database is enhanced with an Automated Fingerprint Verification System to minimise fraud, identity theft, forgery and passport skimming.

Public servants on urgent official assignment abroad and business executives on urgent official business visits, students on scholarships who require to immediately travel abroad, the sick who are in urgent appointment to travel abroad for treatment are not subjected to the system, business officials in urgent official business visits abroad. However, this special group of people will only be exempted after proving that they have genuine documents.
